The
Greater Chennai Police is a historic and distinguished Organization
which has maintained Law and Order in Chennai for the last 350 years.
In
the year 1659 during the British Raj, the Chief of Police was called as
“Pedda Naik”. The Pedda Naik and 20 peons were posted on police duty to
maintain law and order in the erstwhile Madras Pattinam and they
arrested law breakers and produced them in the Choultry Court. Later, in
the 17th Century 'Pedda Naiks' were called as Poligar.
In
1770 'The Board of Police' was formed and they appointed a “Kotwal” or
overseer of markets to control prices of commodities in the market and
to make the tradesmen “behave”. In 1780, the post of superintendent of
Police was created substituting the Kotwal. On 25th of April 1856, Madras Police Commissionerate was established.
In
1876, for the first time, the post of Sub Inspector of Police was
created. At present Chennai City Police under the Commissioner of Police
is policing over 780 square Kilometer area with a population of 70
lakhs.
